5 Reasons Why The Food You Eat Influences Your Sleep

Your dietary habits do have an influence on your sleep.  Certain nutrients in the food you consume can either keep you awake or promote sleep.  The time that elapsed between your last meal and bedtime can also have an influence on a good night’s sleep.  The food and drink you have throughout the day can even have a say at bedtime.

5 Ways In Which Food Influences Your Sleep:

  1. The Influence of the food and drink you have throughout the day: All the food we eat and fluids we drink during the day provide nutrients.  Your brain needs proper nutrients to produce the correct chemical environment that is needed to maintain adequate sleep.
  2. Eating more sugar and saturated fats during the day: More fat and sugar during the day is linked to a less restorative sleep, a lighter sleep, with waking ever so often during the night.
  3. Do not take a Night-cap before bedtime: A glass of alcohol, red wine, whiskey, sherry, etc. will definitely make you drowsy.  However, later in the night, it can actually disturb your sleep and also lessen the quality of your sleep.
  4. Avoid Spicy, Fatty, and Heavy Food too close to Bedtime: These foods are more difficult to digest and can also cause indigestion before bedtime or even when you are sleeping.  It makes it harder for your body to relax enough to be able to fall asleep.
  5. Drink enough water during the day: You body does not function well without enough water.  All actions in your body need water to function properly.  A lack of water can cause a dry mouth or nasal passages which can cause snoring.  But, do not drink a whole bottle of water just before bedtime that will wake you to go to the toilet.  Stay hydrated throughout the day.

The conclusion is that your body needs certain things to calm down enough to get to sleep.  During sleep, your body temperature drops.  Drowsiness after a heavy meal can occur because it takes energy and time to digest, and your temperature can still be slightly elevated.

Certain foods do promote better sleep and others should be avoided.

3 Ways In Which Cannabis Use Affects The Brain And Causes Hunger

Several things happen when you use Cannabis.  The active ingredients in Cannabis, known as cannabinoids, will affect the brain in a number of different ways.  There are no less than 85, probably more, different cannabinoids that will each have a separate kind of effect.

The cannabinoid that provides you with the memory-killing-high is called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).  Together with that high, your brain’s “I am starving” reactor kicks in and send the appropriate message to stimulate hunger.

Why Cannabis Causes Hunger:

  1. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) targets Smell and Taste: (THC) targets the smell and taste senses, among many more things, which make you smell sense intensify, as well as, intensifying your taste buds.  The heightened senses then stimulate your appetite.  And then you get very hungry because everything smells terrific and tastes better.
  2. (THC) affects the Hormones Leptin and Ghrelin: Ghrelin is a hormone that is released by the body to stimulate the brain to increase hunger sensations.  (THC) connects to more than one hunger-stimulator and also affects the release of the feel-good hormone, Dopamine.  (THC) copies the body’s natural feel-good endocannabinoid-system that regulates physiological processes.
  3. (THC) inhibits the release of the Hormone Leptin: Leptin is normally stimulated by the body’s excess in energy stores; however, while (THC) connects with neurotransmitters and hunger stimulators, it inhibits the release of Leptin.  While your brain will normally send the signal that you do not need more food, it will not receive the correct messages.  Less Leptin will have you feeling hungry the whole time.

To conclude; using Cannabis improves your sense of smell which will improve your sense of taste, together with the release of feel-good hormones and hunger hormones, your body will feel its starving.  The combination will be of eating none stop because it feels good and tastes and smell amazing.

Why Do We Eat?  Is It All About The Food?  Shouldn’t We Place More Emphasis On Eating Together Than Just The Food And Eating?

Most Families have a picky-eater or two that will cause problems at every meal time.  The actual reason for their problems with the meal might turn out to be not about the food.  Trying to force someone to eat something they don’t want to will not ensure that they will eat in future.

Why do We Eat?

We eat because our bodies need nourishment.  When you are hungry, your body tells you it needs fuel.  It does not specify what kind of food you should eat, it just sends the message.  Normally we like to eat the foods that we favour because of the enjoyment we experience in tasting it.

When we eat we do not always think about the number of nutrients each meal will deliver.  We only need to still the hunger.

Is it all about the Food?

It does matter what you eat.  It also matters how you prepare your food and it definitely matters when and how you are going to eat it.  But, the whole process of eating is not all about food, a lot of factors influence the concept of preparing and eating food.

Normally a lot of effort goes into preparing food for your family or friends.  You choose the best available.  You think about what the eaters like and do not like, and then you plan a meal according to that likes and dislikes.  And all is done to please the persons eating.

But it is not all about the food.

Placing the Emphasis on Being Together:

Yes, we have to eat to keep our bodies nourished.  Yes, we have to make good, better, best, food choice to gain all the nutrients to stay healthy.  But do you think of either of these things when you prepare a meal for friends or family?

Mostly you will not think about nutrients, etc. when you think about the food you want to prepare.  You will think about what everybody likes to eat.  You will think about how to please everyone with something they like to eat.  You will think about how best to prepare the meal.  You will give lots of thought on how to make the whole meal pleasant for all.

You will want everyone present to enjoy their time together, enjoying the food, but because they are together.  Not focusing on the food itself, but focusing on eating, whatever is on the plate, enjoying each other’s company.

And that is how you can try to get your picky eaters to eat the things they do not trust, you take the focus off the food.  Focus on the togetherness, on other things that do not pertain to food and eating.
